The Rise of The Dave Matthews Band

This band started in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1991 when Dave Matthews decided to put some songs he had written on tape. He didn’t just want to record himself with his guitar; he decided to bring in some instrumental help to give his musical ideas more complexity. He brought on Drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who had been very accomplished jazz musicians, and were local to the Charlottesville music scene, as well as 16 year old musical prodigy Stefan Lessard who played bass. To complete this talented band keyboard player Peter Griesar joined as well as classical violinist Boyd Tinsley.

Their first performance in public was at the Middle East Children’s Alliance Benefit at Trax Nightclub. The official first gig was May 11, 1991 at a private rooftop of the pink warehouse in downtown Charlottesville. After that they started regular gigs at two local clubs called Eastern Standard and Trax Nightclub. In 1992 The Dave Matthews band started a Tuesday night residency at Trax that they kept for a year. With their unique sounds the band name spread quickly and clubs wanted them to come and play for them and the tours began so they could cover more ground. Their fan base also grew at a very fast rate by this time.

In 1993 the band continued to tour up and down the East playing a mix of headline shows, festivals, and much more. With the fan base still growing bigger and bigger they played their first show at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre. They opened for The Tragically Hip and The Samples. Two years later, they would headline this legendary venue. In 1994 they began to record their album at Bearsville Studios in upstate New York with outstanding producer Steve Lillywhite. In January of 1996 the band received their first Grammy nominations with the song “What Would You Say” for best Rock Vocal Performance by a duo or group, and best music video, short film. In February 1997 the band won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal performance for the song “So Much to Say”. The band continues to steadily tour across North America.

In present day and many accomplishments later the Dave Matthews Band embarked on its first Australian tour in four different cities in April of 2014. While touring the band was also in the studio with Rob Cavallo and are still producing music. If you want to hear DMB rock music as well as many other genres.
